Could AI-driven app development change the way we vacation? For visitors heading to Ouray, Colorado, the answer is yes.
When we first started discussing the opportunity to develop an AI-powered tourism app for Ouray, Colorado, we did not quite know where this project would take us. Literally, we knew it would take us to a beautiful mountain town, and we were already excited about that. More importantly, the project led to the development of AI-driven technology that we believe could change the tourism experience for cities and attractions around the world.
AI-Powered Innovation for a Quaint Colorado Town
Ouray, a charming town nestled in the Colorado mountains, first began searching for a tourism app that would give them more control over the user experience than their previous solution offered. The town's administration reached out to DAS Labs, a California-based AI engineering firm with a reputation for innovative solutions. Their request was simple yet challenging: an app that was cutting-edge, offered more control, and would revitalize their tourist experience.
DAS Labs' vision for the project was to build an AI-driven interactive guide for tourists. An intelligent recommendation engine would help visitors discover activities, while an AR interface would allow local businesses to attract visitors in real time through on-screen overlays. The town's officials were immediately drawn to this vision. And with that, the first steps toward UrWay were taken.
Overcoming Technical Challenges
Development of UrWay began in the summer of 2022. DAS Labs utilized Google APIs as a reliable foundation, drawing on years of experience building similar applications. The team was making steady progress until May 2023, when they encountered an unexpected roadblock.
Google released a major update to their APIs, designed to be more developer-friendly. The AI and AR development team at DAS Labs had mixed feelings: the update was a great move overall, but its timing during active development meant large portions of the app needed to be reworked for compatibility. The team adapted quickly, ensuring the app's features and functionality remained intact.
A Vision for AI-Powered Tourism
DAS Labs' vision for UrWay was to redefine tourism apps by putting AI at the center of the experience.
The Problem with Current Activity Search
Right now, if you are standing at a crossroads in an unfamiliar city while on vacation and looking for something to do, your options are cumbersome. You can try to find a friendly local who might share your tastes. Or you can open your phone, type "things to do near me," and scroll through dozens of options. Once you find one, you still need to check pricing, availability, and whether it matches your interests. This can take half an hour or more of precious vacation time.
The AI-Driven Alternative
Instead, imagine opening the tourism app for the city you are visiting. An AI-driven algorithm analyzes your location, preferences, and available activities to surface personalized recommendations instantly. When you want a visual experience, the AR interface overlays your phone's camera view with nearby activities, walking times, pricing, and real-time availability.
The possibilities extend from identifying nearby restaurants and exploring local activities to locating shopping spots and accessing real-time booking information. All powered by AI and, where it adds value, presented through augmented reality overlays on your device.
This is the future of tourism that UrWay represents: AI-driven recommendations enhanced by spatial computing, setting a new standard for how visitors explore unfamiliar destinations.
